Hans-Theo Normann studied economics and philosophy in Münster, Freiburg and Oxford. He received his PhD in economics from the European University Institute in Florence.

Normann has been Professor of Game Theory and Experimental Economics at the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) since 2010. Previously, he was a professor in London and Frankfurt. Normann is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. His main area of interest is industrial economics and competition, in particular the application of laboratory experiments to competition policy issues. He has lectured on this area of research at various national competition authorities, such as the US Department of Justice and the Directorate General for Competition in Brussels.

His work on mergers in asymmetric markets has influenced decisions of the German Cartel Office and DG Competition. Normann’s research on vertical mergers has directly influenced the EU Non-Horizontal Merger Guidelines.
